William "Shot" Jeffords

William “Shot” Jeffords, age 81 years, a resident of the Bay Valley Community in Pope County, passed away Thursday morning, March 6, 2025 at 9:17 A.M. at Baptist Health in Paducah, Kentucky. Shot, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was born November 14, 1943 in Brownfield. He was the son of Charles Owen and Nellie May (Parks) Jeffords. On August 2, 1980, Shot was united in marriage to Alice Hodge in Belknap. She survives. In addition to his wife, Shot is survived by: his sons – Charlie (Leslee) Jeffords and William Lee “Jay” (Brenda) Jeffords; three grandsons – Seth, Owen and Josh; a nephew – Teddy (Kathy) Jeffords; two nieces – Pat Reynolds and Sue Mizell; as well as a host of friends. In addition to his parents, Shot was preceded in death by: brothers – Les, Ned and Ted (Juanita) and a sister-in-law – Rhudell Jeffords. Shot was a graduate of Pope County Community High School. On March 7, 1966, Shot enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge on February 27, 1968. He served during the Vietnam War and was discharged with the rank of SP4. He was a lifelong member of the Lusk Memorial V.F.W. Post #9227 in Golconda. Shot was employed by the Illinois Department of Corrections and retired with the rank of captain. Shot was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed farming, hunting, particularly coon hunting. He cherished time spent with his family and visiting with his many friends. He took great pride in living on the family farm for over 70 years. Shot was a member of the Temple Hill Community Church. A celebration of life will be conducted Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Massac County Youth Fair Community Building, 4476 Korte Road, Metropolis, Illinois. Military honors will be accorded at 11 A.M. by the Beggs Gurley VFW Post and the Metropolis American Legion Post. Following the military honors, a service will be conducted by Pastor Jerry Parr and Pastor Kevin Richerson. A luncheon will follow. Meat and drinks will be furnished. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert to share. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
