Mary Elliott

Mary Georgia Vaughn Elliott, age 95 years, a resident of rural Vienna, Illinois, passed away Friday afternoon, June 13, 2025, at 5:40 P.M. at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis, Illinois. Mary was born August 11, 1929 in Pulaski County Illinois. She was the daughter of Ernest A. and Lydia (Folks) Vaughn. On November 1, 1958, Mary was united in marriage to Donald R. Elliott in Vienna, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1983. Mary is survived by: a foster daughter – Donna L. Robinson of Marion; a foster grandson – Nathan (Lacey) Thurston of Antioch, Tennessee; a host of nieces and nephews, including – Tim (Melody) Elliott, Mark (Beth) Elliott, Cindy (Ron) Studer, and Lisa Overton all of Vienna as well as Becky (Mitch) Groves of Newburgh, Indiana; additionally, Mary is survived by great and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by: a sister – Ernestine (Ernest) Mohr; a half-sister – Violet Castleman; 2 half-brothers – Carlos (Srynitha) Vaughn and Martin (Pearl) Vaughn; a brother-in-law – Bill (JoAnn) Elliott; a sister-in-law – Mary Lou (Jim) Avery; a nephew – Jimmy Ray Avery; and a niece – Sheryl Jones. Mary was a graduate of Post Creek Grade School in Pulaski County, Illinois as well as the Karnak High School. She attended Draughn’s Business College in Paducah, Kentucky. Following her graduation from business college, Mary was employed for 13 years by Griffin Marine Terminal in Joppa, where she worked as a secretary and clerk. She then accepted a position as office manager for United Cities Gas Company in Metropolis, where she was employed for 25 years, prior to her retirement. Mary was a member of the Pond Community Ladies Club. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading, and many types of handcrafts, including knitting, crochet, cross-stitch and needlework. Mary cherished her faithful canine companions. She was a member of the former Oak Grove Baptist Church. A funeral service honoring the life of Mary Elliott will be conducted Monday afternoon, June 16, 2025, at 1 P.M. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor David Faulkner will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be conducted Monday, June 16, 2025, from 12 Noon until the service hour at 1 P.M. at the funeral home.
