Joseph R. McHugh

Joseph Robert "Bob" McHugh, 85, of Belleville, IL,was born June 14, 1925 in Grand Chain, IL, and grew up in Tunnel Hill, IL. He died Sunday afternoon, November 7, 2010, at 12:05 PM at Belleville Memorial Hospital. Bob was a graduate of Vienna High School, class of 1943. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served as a radioman aboard the USS Independence, the first aircraft carrier equipped for nighttime flights. Bob was a very loving father. He was a skilled carpenter and painter and he especially liked working for senior citizens. Bob was a 63 year member of the New Burnside Masonic Lodge # 772 AF&AM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph McHugh and Mae, nee Alexander, McHugh; and a brother William "Bill" McHugh. Surviving are his devoted wife of 42 years, Mary Lou, nee McMahan, McHugh, of Belleville, IL, formerly of Tunnel Hill, IL; six children: Alex J. McHugh, of Omaha, NE, Anita J. (Tom) Steinmann, of Edwardsville, IL, Amy J. (Debra) McHugh, of Hazelwood, MO, Andy J. and Allen J. Moore, of Belleville, IL, and Angie J. (Joe) Janton, of Little Rock, AR; eight grandchildren: Cara, Jessa and Amanda Janton, of Little Rock, AR, Robert Moore, of Caseyville, IL, McKenna and Payton Crump-McHugh, of Hazelwood, MO, and Marian and Josie Steinmann, of Edwardsville, IL; one great grandchild Lucy Janton of Little Rock, AR.; one brother: Barney McHugh, of Michigan; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, November 11, 2010, at 1 PM at Community of Christ (Webb) Church. High Priest Glenn Webb will officiate. Burial will be in the Webb Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 of Vienna along with the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Detail. Friends may call from 6 PM - 8 PM Wednesday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna and from 12 Noon - 1 PM Thursday at the church. Masonic rites will be accorded at 8 PM Wednesday by New Burnside Masonic Lodge # 772 AF&AM.
