At the time of his passing, Herb was surrounded by members of his loving family. Herb was born March 17, 1942 in Benton, Kentucky. He was the son of Herbert Venard Chance and Thelma Louise (Farley) Chance. On July 30, 1966, Herb was united in marriage to Patsy I. Conley at the Johnson County Courthouse in Vienna, Illinois. She survives. In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by: his children – Pam (Rusty) Morris of Ozark, Marty (Kindra) Chance and Kim Hogan all of Tunnel Hill; grandchildren – Josh (Alex) Morris, Tyler (Cady) Morris, Maranda (Lance) Merchant, Tayler Chance, Lucas (Racheal) Hogan, Reed Hogan, and Augusta Hogan; great grandchildren – Avery Morris, Grady Morris, Hayden Morris, Axel Huckelberry, Elijah Hogan, Marshall Hogan, Briley Merchant and Brynna Merchant; a brother – Howard Champion and a sister – Patricia Champion both of Murphysboro; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by – a son-in-law – John Hogan; a grandson – Matthew Hogan; brothers – Glenn Chance, Larry Champion, Richard Champion, and Cecil Champion, Jr.; a sister – Carolyn Soper; and an infant brother – Joe Mural Chance. As a young man, Herb worked as a timber cutter. He was also employed by Schaumleffel Farms. Herb worked for over 40 years in the monument installation division of J.W. Reynolds Monument Company. Herb was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, horseback riding, boating and camping. He was a member of the Wooten Coon Hunters Club as well as the Shady Nook Hunting Club. Herb is fondly remembered for his cooking skills at the hunting clubs, particularly for his ham and beans and homemade peach cobblers. Herb cherished time spent with his family, particularly his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In recent years, as Herb’s health declined and he was unable to be outdoors as much as he would have liked, he enjoyed sitting in his recliner and watching the birds at his feeders. Herb was a member of the New Burnside Community Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, March 11, 2025, at 11 A.M. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in the New Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, March 10, 2025, from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. There will also be a further time of visitation Tuesday morning, March 11, 2025, from 10 A.M. until the funeral hour at 11 A.M. at the funeral home.
