Floyd G. Koehler

Floyd G. Koehler, age 70 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Saturday morning, June 10, 2017, at 10:16 AM at his home. Floyd was born February 27, 1947 in Evansville, Indiana. He was the eldest of four children born to Floyd and Martha Lillian (Whiteside) Koehler. On February 6, 1970, Floyd was united in marriage to Linda J. Phillips at the Vienna First Baptist Church. She survives. Additionally, Floyd is survived by: his 3 daughters – Wendi (Bill) Culkin of Vienna, Kim (Eric) Blackman of Vienna, and Jamie (Chad) Parker of Metropolis; grandchildren – Bryan (Amanda) Culkin and their daughters, Brandon (Haley) Culkin and their daughters, along with Taryn, Tanner, Tori, Jerret, Kayler, Mallory, Natalie, Caleb, and Kylie; Floyd was also anticipating the birth of a grandchild in January 2018. He is also survived by a brother – Bob Koehler of Vienna; 2 sisters – Carla (Bill) Glisson of Vienna and Nancy (Gary) Riley of Vienna; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents. Floyd was a 1965 graduate of Vienna High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in biological sciences and a minor in history from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1971. Floyd was an educator and taught for 33 years at Goreville High School prior to his retirement. Additionally, Floyd served faithfully as an officer with the Vienna Police Department for 34 years and was a member of the Vienna Fire Department for 40 years. He served for 4 years as fire chief. Floyd’s strong sense of community and service led him to volunteer his time and energy to many local boards, committees, and organizations. He was a dedicated member of Vienna Masonic Lodge # 150 A.F. & A.M. for 30 years and has served as the lodge secretary for the past 25 years. Floyd served for 30 years as a member of the Johnson County Housing Authority Board, 10 of those years as board chairman. He served as vice-chairman for 8 ½ years on the Johnson County Emergency Telephone System (911) Board. Floyd was the current President, a position which he has held for the past 18 years, of the Southern Illinois Police Association and had been a member of this organization for over 30 years. He was also devoted to the care and maintenance of the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery and had served on the cemetery board since 1992 and was the current board president. In his limited spare time, Floyd enjoyed pursing his passion for fishing and was a member of the Johnson County Bass Club, serving currently as the secretary/treasurer of the club. Floyd is fondly remembered for his love of volunteering to assist in the IL-CHIP program (a Masonic lodge community outreach which helps safeguard and protect children). Also, in his role as a member of the Vienna Fire Dept., Floyd enjoyed helping set up and present the annual fourth of July fireworks display. Floyd was of the Presbyterian faith. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, at 10 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Darrell Ford will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Dr. Ed Hollis will conduct the committal service. Visitation will be conducted Monday evening, June 12, 2017, from 5 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home. There will be a memorial walk-thru at 8 PM Monday by members of law enforcement organizations and fire department personnel. Masonic rites will immediately follow under the auspices of Vienna Masonic Lodge # 150 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be made to the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery, c/o Chesley Williams, P.O.
