Mr. Delmer Dean Harris

Delmer Dean Harris Aged 86 Years Resident of Joppa, IL Delmer Dean Harris passed away at 8:31 AM on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at his home in Joppa, IL. Mr. Harris was born on June 12, 1925 in Massac County the son of the late Hider A. and Mary E. (Cochran) Harris and had attained the age of 86 years. He married Shirley J. Fletcher in 1949 and had later divorced. Shirley passed away on January 6, 1999. He married Mildred J. (Riley) Hines-Harris on December 21, 1974 and they later divorced. Delmer worked in construction for many years and was a member of the Construction Workers Union in Metropolis, IL as well as the Construction Workers Union in Evansville, IN. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of the American Legion in Metropolis, IL. He enjoyed rabbit and coon hunting, fishing and loved to work and care for his yard. In addition to his companion, Mildred Harris of Joppa, IL, he is survived by his son, Harry and his wife Dee Harris of Joppa, IL, step-children, Wilma Russell of Eldorado, IL, Milton Lee Hines Jr. of Buncombe, IL, Phyllis Jaco of Metropolis, IL, James Hines of Brookport, IL, Wanda and her husband Jack Wright of Stonewood, WV, John Hines of Stonewood, WV, Darell Hines of Vienna, IL and Beatrice and her husband Jim Gordon of Metropolis, IL, one grandchild, Ora Oldham, two great grandchildren, Trenton and Jalynn, 28 step grandchildren, 37 step great grandchildren and 17 step great great grandchildren, a beloved sister Dorothy Hiatt. In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his twin brother, Elmer G. Harris, a sister Pauline Betts, 3 half-sisters, Letha Schmidt, Nella Mae Snyder, Gladys Batos, and a half brother and sister in law Alan and Lena Anderson who acted as caregivers to Delmer as a child. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, IL with Pastor Billy Joe Hiatt officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Joppa, IL where military rites will be accorded by the Illinois Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #306. Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 PM on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
