Roy Sims

Roy Sims, age 78, a resident of rural Buncombe, IL, passed away Wednesday evening, September 27th, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Roy was born on February 2nd, 1945, to Hazel Junita Sims. He was united in marriage to Alice Caraker on September 20th, 1969 at Cedar Grove Church, and they were married for 54 years. Together, they have two daughters; Junita (Kerry) Davis of Makanda, IL., and Christie (Shane) Francis of Goreville, IL. Roy was a graduate of West Frankfort High School, and graduated Shawnee Community College with an Associate of Applied Science. Roy retired from the U.S. Army after serving from 1964-1985. He worked as a Custodian at Shawnee Community College, and also worked as a Custodian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Roy was a member of the Pine Lakes Golf Course at Herrin, IL. He was an avid golfer, and also enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Roy is survived by his wife, Alice Sims, two daughters, Junita Davis and Christie Francis, two son-in-laws, Kerry Davis and Shane Francis, four grandchildren, Tyler Barnfield of Goreville, Alicia Barnfield of Goreville, Dakota (Courtney) Francis of Goreville, Colten (Aimee) Francis of Tunnel Hill, a sister, Mille Sims of West Frankfort, a sister-in-law, Ann Ford of Karnak, a brother-in-law, Delbert Caraker of Marion, and many loving nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Junita Sims, and his siblings Maxine Sims, Mary Sims, Marshall Sims, Floyd Sims, Jack Sims, Ellen Treece, Bobbie Roye, Betty Odum, Lula Donas, Wanda Kerley, Cathy Glenn, and Jenny Trexler. A service honoring the life of Roy Sims will be conducted Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, at 11 A.M. at Grange Hall Freewill Baptist Church, 9950 Grassy Rd, Marion, IL 62959. Pastor Kevin McNeely will officiate. Burial will take place at Mt. Zion Cemetery, 5 Mt. Zion Ln, Buncombe, IL 62912. A visitation will be conducted Monday, October 2nd, 2023, from 4 P.M. - 7 P.M. at Grange Hall Freewill Baptist Church. Memorials in Roy’s memory may be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund, ℅ Owen Lee Webb, 2190 Mt. Zion Road, Vienna, IL 62995 or to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army Burial Honors Detail prior to interment. There will be a lunch hosted after interment at the Grange Hall Freewill Baptist Church.
