Gary R. "Doc" Maier

Gary R. “Doc” Maier, age 77 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Friday morning, February 3, 2023, at 10:26 AM at his home. Doc, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was born October 12, 1945 in Urbana, Illinois. He was the son of Ralph C., Maier and Genevieve M. (Froman) Maier. On April 24, 1965, Doc was united in marriage to Sheila Rewerts at St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church in Thomasboro, Illinois. Together, Doc and Sheila had enjoyed almost 58 years of marriage. In addition to his beloved wife, Doc is also survived by: their children – Billy “Oscar” (Karen) Maier of Stonefort, G. Ralph (Dawn) Maier of Ozark, James (Debbie) Maier of Simpson, and Tracy Troyer; 10 grandchildren – Christopher (Ashley) Maier, Cody (Whitney) Maier, Raymond (Vanessa) Maier, Andrew Maier, Jacob (Shayelin) Maier, Timmy Maier, Derrek Maier, Gregory Maier, Danyelle (Steven) Loury, and Gary Troyer; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister – Joyce Powell of Lake Mary, Florida; a brother-in-law – David Leonard of Champaign; a sister-in-law – Agnes Maier of Thomasboro; as well as nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and many friends. Doc was anticipating the birth of a great-grandson in March 2023. In addition to his parents, Doc was preceded in death by: 2 sisters – Donna Leonard and Janet Ashby; 2 brothers – Lyle Maier and Mervin Maier; and a son-in-law – Danny Troyer. Doc was the former owner and operator of Maier Excavating Service for over 45 years, prior to his retirement. In his spare time, Doc enjoyed fishing. He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Vienna. A gathering of family and friends honoring the life of Gary R. “Doc” Maier will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 1 PM – 3 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. A prayer service, led by Father Tom Barrett, will be conducted at 3 PM Saturday.
