Charles D. "C.D." Ross

February 6, 1930 - February 20, 2020

Charles Dewey “C.D.” Ross, age 90 years, a resident of Vienna, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, February 20, 2020, at 2:17 AM at his home. C.D. was born February 6, 1930 in the Ozark community of Johnson County, Illinois. He was the second of three children born to Dewey Ross and Opal (McCuan) Ross. On November 25, 1952, C.D. was united in marriage to Ruth D. Boyd in Williamson County Illinois. She survives. Other survivors include: their children – Sherry (Gary) Brumley and Vicki (John) Summers all of Vienna; grandchildren – Branon (Mike) Waters of Vienna, Grayson (Justin) Dawes of Vienna, and Reagan (Brandon) Tanner of Tunnel Hill; great grandchildren – Grady and Griffin Waters, Adler & Brooks Dawes, and Wren Tanner; a sister – Roma Deaton of Tunnel Hill; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, C.D. was preceded in death by a sister – Florence Simmons. C.D. was a 1948 graduate of Vienna High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private in 1952. Following his military service, C.D. was employed as a construction laborer. In 1972, he began his working career with the Illinois Department of Corrections and was employed at the Vienna Correctional Center until his retirement in 1991. C.D. was a 47 year member of the Masonic Fraternity. He was a member of the former New Burnside Masonic Lodge # 772 A.F. & A.M. and more recently a member of Vienna Masonic Lodge # 150 A.F. & A.M. due to merger. C.D., along with his wife Ruth, faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Vienna. C.D. was a sports enthusiast and an avid St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball fan. He loved attending the sporting events and activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A service honoring the life of C.D. Ross will be conducted Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2020, at 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Jerry Schell and Pastor Travis Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Reynoldsburg Cemetery near Tunnel Hill. A military flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by the Illinois National Guard burial honors detail. Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2020, from 12 Noon – 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Memorials may be made to the Reynoldsburg Cemetery, c/o Bob Harper, 30 Harpertown Lane, Tunnel Hill, IL 62972 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
