Carlos Kerley

Carlos Kerley, age 79 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, March 30, 2024, at 12:20 P.M. at his home. Carlos was born May 13, 1944 at the family farm home near Buncombe, Johnson County Illinois. Before Carlos’ first birthday, the family moved back to the Flatwoods community near Simpson where he grew up. Carlos was the son of James Avery Kerley and Elizabeth Mae (Young) Kerley. On September 3, 1965, Carlos was united in marriage to Ella ‘Elly” Stevens. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2016. Carlos is survived by: his sons – Carlos (Sheila) Kerley, Jr. of Simpson and Steve Kerley of Smithson; 2 granddaughters – Caitlin Kerley and Savannah Kerley; sisters – Dorothy Jones of Metropolis, Jeannie (Bob) McCall of Buncombe, and Anita (Roger) Ditterline of the Flatwoods community; a brother – Kenneth (Cheryl) Kerley of the Flatwoods community; 2 sisters-in-law – Leda Jane Kerley of the Flatwoods community and Pattie Kerley of Skapoose, Oregon. In addition to his parents and wife, Carlos was preceded in death by: an infant grandson – Cody Kerley; 2 brothers – James Kerley and Robert Kerley; 3 sisters – Frances Rohrer, Kathy Walker and Mary Stone; 3 brothers-in-law – Jack Jones, Virgil Walker and George Stone. Carlos was a 1962 graduate of Vienna High School. He was employed by the Illinois Department of Corrections at the Vienna Correctional Center. Carlos retired in 1995 after 30 years of service. Carlos enjoyed bow hunting and fishing. He was an avid ATV rider and enjoyed several trips to the western United States to ride with friends. They particularly enjoyed riding in southwestern Colorado. A graveside service honoring the life of Carlos Kerley will be conducted Saturday morning, April 6, 2024, at 11 A.M. at the Kerley Cemetery in the Flatwoods community. Pastor David Faulkner will officiate. There will be no visitation. Those attending the graveside service are invited to gather at the cemetery at 10:45 A.M. Saturday.
