Verna was born February 6, 1927 at the family home in Johnson County Illinois. She was the daughter of John and Oma (Brumley) McNeely. On February 8, 1947, Verna was united in marriage to Gilbert Taylor at the old Taylor United Methodist Church, north of Vienna. He preceded her in death on November 15, 2018. Verna is survived by; her sons – Ronald (Joyce) Taylor of Metropolis, Illinois and Greg (Vicky) Taylor of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren – Amy (Corey) Jeffords of Paducah, Kentucky, Michelle Taylor and Andrew (Bonnie) Taylor all of Olathe, Kansas; great grandchildren – Daniel Noah Jeffords, Isabelle Grace Jeffords, Paityn Julianna Jeffords, Logan Neil Taylor, and Olyvia Nadene Taylor. In addition to her parents and husband, Verna was preceded in death by; a granddaughter – Julie Taylor; an infant sister – Dorothy McNeely; and her brothers – Delbert Allen McNeely, Donald Lee McNeely and Troy Eugene McNeely. Verna was a 1947 graduate of Vienna High School. She was employed as a proofreader by Underwriters Laboratory in Chicago. Following the family’s return to Johnson County, Verna was employed as a clerk/cashier at Daniel’s Grocery and later by Bill Miles Food Mart. Verna was a longtime faithful member of the Vienna First United Methodist Church. During the past few years, while she resided in Massac County, Verna attended the Metropolis First Methodist Church. Verna enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She also was skilled at many types of hand crafts, including needlepoint, crochet, quilting and bead work. Verna was a longtime member of the Johnson County Homemaker’s Extension. A service honoring the life of Verna Taylor will be conducted Saturday morning, March 23, 2024, at 11 A.M. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Rick McNeely will officiate. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery, north of Vienna. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:30 A.M. – 11 A.M. at the funeral home.
