Richard Brumley

Richard Brumley, age 71 years, a resident of rural Belknap, Illinois, passed away Saturday morning, October 20, 2018, at4:24 AM at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky. Richard was born June 7, 1947 in Johnson County Illinois. He was the eldest child born to George Brumley, Jr. and Norma (Wright) Brumley. On May 21, 1966, he was united in marriage to Karen Evans at the Pleasant Ridge Church north of Vienna. She survives. Other survivors include: their son – Brett (Angela) Brumley of Vienna; a granddaughter – Alyssa Brumley; 4 sisters – Brenda Akins of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Annie (Al) Duncan of Anna, Sharon Chapman and Marlene (Tony) Belden all of Vienna; a brother – Gary (Sherry) Brumley of Vienna; aunts – Wanda Bailey and Catherine Brumley both of Vienna; a sister-in-law – Marilyn (Everett) Whitnel of Belknap; an Army buddy – Tom (Sue) Cavanaugh of Hutchinson, Kansas; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by: a sister – Susie Kerley; 2 brothers-in-law – Alan Akins and Herman Chapman; his father-in-law & mother-in-law – Kenneth and Frances Evans; and a brother-in-law & sister-in-law – James Lewis & Karen Ruth Evans. Richard was a 1965 graduate of Vienna High School. He served from December 1966 until December 1968 in the U.S. Army. Richard was a Vietnam War veteran. He was honorably discharged with the rank of SP5(T). Richard was a member of American Legion Post # 280 in Benton. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 in Vienna. Additionally, Richard is a Past District Commander of District # 15 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served on the convention committee for the Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as having recently been named an aide-de-camp to the national Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Following his discharge from military service, Richard worked as a truck driver and laborer in the warehouse for Fruit Belt Farm Service. He began his career with the Illinois Department of Corrections in 1977. He first worked as an officer at Vienna Correctional Center. He was later instrumental in assisting with the establishment of the Dixon Springs Work Camp and completed his career at Shawnee Correctional Center. He retired on September 1, 2001 with the rank of Captain and the position of shift commander. In his youth, Richard enjoyed fishing. He is remembered for his love of music and was an enthusiastic collector of classic vinyl records. Additionally, Richard was a sports fan and enjoyed collecting and trading all types of sports cards. He also enjoyed watching sporting events on television and was a fan of both the University of Kentucky Wildcats as well as the Southern Illinois University Salukis. Richard was of the Christian faith. A service honoring the life of Richard Brumley will be held Wednesday afternoon, October 24, 2018, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Pete Vinson will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by members of the Illinois District # 15 Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Detail. Visitation will be conducted Tuesday evening, October 23, 2018, from 4 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
