He was born October 19, 1929 in Cypress, Illinois to John Clinton Martin and Bessie (Toler) Martin. On October 22, 1950, Ralph was united in marriage to Ruby H. Porter in Paragould, Arkansas. She survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters – Susan Diane (Ed) Annable and Kathy Marie (Doug) Smith; 5 grandchildren – Kacey (Jeremy) Minton, Troy Annable, Korey (Sherry) Campbell, Ashley (Paul) Jefferys and Heather Carrel; 6 great grandchildren – Jonathan Moore, Kyle Campbell, Seth Campbell, Vincent Carrel, Jameson Minton and Aria Smith; sisters – Iola Baker, Patricia (Jim) Harrison and Sue Bresett; and a host of nieces and nephews. Ralph was preceded in death by: his father – John Clinton Martin; his mother and beloved stepfather – Bessie and Herb Mathis; a daughter – Tami Annette (Garry) Adams; 2 brothers – Robert and Leroy Martin; and 2 step-brothers – Robert and Donald Mathis. After graduating from Anna-Jonesboro High School in Anna, Illinois, Ralph served from October 1950 until February 1953 in the United States Army. He later worked as a butcher at Daniels as well as U & H grocery stores both located in Vienna until joining the U.S. Postal Service. He worked as a rural carrier out of the Vienna and Murphysboro, Illinois post offices from 1958 – 1986. He is remembered by many as “the best mailman we ever had.” Ralph served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna. He was a fine Christian example for family and friends. Ralph was known around Vienna for his beautiful vegetable garden that he enjoyed working in daily. He was also a lifetime St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother by his family. A funeral service honoring the life of Ralph Martin will be conducted Thursday afternoon, August 1, 2024, at 1 P.M. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Tommy Gray will officiate. Burial will be in the Cypress Cemetery Visitation will be held Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 11 A.M. until the service time at 1 P.M. at the funeral home.
