Lula E. Dickson

Lula Edna (Smith) Dickson, age 91 years, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Monday morning, February 13, 2023, at 8:30 AM at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Illinois. Lula was born January 7, 1932 at the family home in Massac County Illinois. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Theodora (Moll) Smith. On April 13, 1957, Lula was united in marriage to Charles Frederick Dickson at New Hope Baptist Church near New Columbia. Charles preceded her in death on December 10, 2021. Survivors include: her daughters – Lou Ann (Billy) Hiatt, Mary (Rick) King, and Edna (Mark) Bundren all of Vienna; grandchildren – Stacy (Jason) Simpson and Nathan (Kathryn) Hiatt all of Vienna, Dereck (Kendra) King of Goreville, Kara Hudson of Carterville, Taylor Bundren of Valparaiso, Indiana, Haley Bundren of Murray, Kentucky, Nelson Bundren and Harold Bundren both of Vienna; great grandchildren – Tracy, Carmen, Jackson, Charlie, Hayden, Eli Charles, Braxton, Asher, and Ryden; a brother – Verl Smith of rural Belknap; 2 sisters – Frances Goins and Barbara Rohrer both of Metropolis; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Lula was anticipating the birth of a great grandson in August. In addition to her parents and husband, Lula was preceded in death by: 2 sisters – Virginia Black and Iva Hines; and 4 brothers – Lavern, Charles, Earl and Carl Smith. Lula was a graduate of Massac County High School. In her youth, Lula had been employed as a telephone operator. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed making quilts, sewing and handcrafted embroidered pieces. Lula was devoted to her family and loved caring for and babysitting her grandchildren and other children in her family through the years. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. A graveside service honoring the life of Lula Smith Dickson will be conducted Thursday afternoon, February 16, 2023, at 4 PM at New Hope Cemetery, 6408 New Columbia Road, Belknap, Illinois. Brother Eric Lam will officiate. There will be no public visitation. Those attending the service are invited to gather at the cemetery at 3:45 PM Thursday.
