Herbert "Leon" Moore

Herbert "Leon" Moore, age 88 years, a former resident of Anna, passed away Friday evening, December 19, 2014, at 9:58 PM at the home of his daughter & son-in-law, Sue & Bob Brettelle, near Sullivan, Illinois following a brief battle with cancer. Leon was born May 23, 1926 in Creal Springs, Illinois. He was the son of Isaac and Pearl (Faulkner) Moore. On January 4, 1948 Leon was united in marriage to Evelyn Louise Cheek in Ozark. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1993. Survivors include: his daughter- Janice “Sue” Moore Brettelle and her husband Bob of Sullivan; 3 grandchildren- Stacey Ann (Don) Duffy, Amy Lou (Chase) Winter, Marie Louise (Donny) Brey; 9 great grandchildren- Katie Teichman, Taylor Teichman, Rachel Duffy, Jay Winter, Megan Winter, Curtis Brey, Owen Sheley, Bernadette Sheley and Dallas Brey; a sister- Betty Jolgren of Bourbonnais; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Leon was preceded in death by: an infant daughter- Elizabeth Ann Moore; 3 brothers- Frela, William and Clyde Moore; 2 sisters- Lela Goddard and Louise Henry. Leon was a graduate of the American High School in Chicago. He was an U.S. Army Veteran and served in the European Theater of Operation during World War II. He was employed as an inspector for Caterpillar, Inc. in Aurora for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1986. Leon was a life member of both the American Legion Post 1271 in Sugar Grove and the Vienna Masonic Lodge #150 AF&AM. Leon was a member of the Anna Heights Baptist Church. Leon was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and in his youth trapping. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels in his yard. Leon was an avid reader and collector of Louis L’ Amour western novels. Masonic rites were accorded Monday afternoon, December 22, 2014, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. A funeral service immediately followed the masonic rites. Brother Tim Blankenship officiated. Burial, with military rites, was in the Taylor Cemetery north of Vienna. Visitation was conducted from 11 AM - 1 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society 4503 W.
