Eleanor "Jean" Cox

Eleanor “Jean” Cox, age 91 years, a resident of Vienna, passed away Thursday morning, August 10, 2017, at 1:30 AM at Baptist Health in Paducah, Kentucky. Jean was born September 17, 1925. She was the daughter of Thomas Arthur Taylor and Lesta America (Choate) Taylor. On May 11, 1946, Jean was united in marriage to Clarence E. Cox in Pinckneyville, Illinois. Together, Clarence and Jean had enjoyed almost 71 years of marriage prior to Clarence’s passing on April 3, 2017. Jean is survived by: her children: Sharon (her husband, Dan) Huffman of Metropolis, Sheila (her husband, Charles) Douglas of Karnak, Carol (her husband Russ) Brown of Metropolis, and Reggy (his wife, Karen) Cox of Karnak; 12 grandchildren: Sarah (her husband, Lucus) Grace, Bethany (her husband, Brandon) Fisher, Brittany (her husband, Timothy) Barton, Chad (his wife, Jodie) Douglas, Nathan (his wife Bridget) Douglas, Casey Douglas, Kyle (his wife, Andrea) Sommer, Heather Cox (her husband, Ogden), Brittany (her husband, Brandon) Blackburn, Kaleb Cox, Kalissa Cox and Rachelle Cox; 16 great grandchildren – Landon Grace, Lane Grace, Chloe Fisher, Cohen Fisher, Mason Barton, Jonah Barton, Harper Barton, Jaelyn Douglas, Cambell Douglas, Charlee Jo Douglas, Madeline Douglas, Morgan Douglas, Keaton Douglas, Caden Sommer, Bentley Blackburn and Roczen Blackburn; a sister-in-law – Betty Noble of Vienna; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by a brother – Glen Taylor and 4 sisters – Thelma Stewart, Melba Owen, Helen Shoemaker and Marjorie Morris. Jean attended Simpson High School and was a 1942 graduate of Vienna High School. She was a devoted and lifelong homemaker. Jean loved taking care of her family. For many years she was a member of the “Smiling Momma’s” unit of the Massac County Homemaker’s Extension. Jean is remembered for her wonderful cooking skills, particularly her apple pie and chicken & dumplings. She enjoyed family gatherings and time spent at the lake. Jean had also been an avid bowler. She had participated in league bowling through the years. Jean also spent quiet time pursuing her pastime of reading. Jean was a devoted Christian and member of the Joppa Missionary Baptist Church where she had worked in the Bible School program and nursery department. A service honoring the life of Eleanor Jean Cox will be conducted Sunday afternoon, August 13, 2017, at 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor David Wright will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 13, 2017, from 11 AM - 2 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Memorials may be made to the Joppa Missionary Baptist Church (Building Fund), P.O. Box 276, Joppa, Illinois 62953. Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Chad Douglas, Nathan Douglas, Casey Douglas, Kaleb Cox and Kyle Sommer.
