Mr. David Whiteside

W. David Whiteside Age: 89 years A resident of rural Vienna, IL (the Pond Community) Passed away Tuesday morning, September 18, 2012, at 12:21 AM at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois. David was born July 16, 1923 in Simpson Township, Johnson County Illinois. He was the son of Fred David & Melissa Irene (Wood) Whiteside. David was united in marriage to Juanita Lou Beggs on October 22, 1944 in Buncombe, Illinois. She preceded him in death on May 23, 2008. Survivors include: A Daughter – Gail Balsamello, and her husband James, of Lake Villa, IL A Granddaughter – Racheal Ann Hughes, and her husband James, of Zion, IL 2 Great Grandsons – Daniel A. Hopkins & Chester J. Hughes A Brother – Fred Earl Whiteside of Vienna, IL A Sister – Betty Jean Adams of Chicota, TX Nieces & Nephews In addition to his Parents and Wife, David was preceded in death by: A Son – Dennis David Whiteside 2 Sisters – Irene Genevieve Easthom and Catharine Louise Whiteside A Brother – Samuel Sherman Whiteside David was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was stationed in Pensacola, FL and was seriously injured in a plane crash during a training exercise. David was honorably discharged with the rank of Seaman 2nd Class. David earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University. He was an educator and administrator. David began his teaching career as a math instructor, later also serving as principal, of the Ware Public School. He then served from 1955 until his retirement in 1979 for Public School District # 214 in Arlington Heights, IL. David served as high school student counselor, driver’s education instructor and later served as the administrator for student counselors in eight District # 214 high schools. Due to the rapid population growth which occurred in that area, David was proud to say that District # 214 had to build a new high school within the district every 2 years beginning in 1962. David had a deep love of the land and enjoyed working on his farm during his retirement. He also enjoyed woodworking, building bluebird houses, bird feeders, and decorative wall shelves. David was also a voracious reader and loved to study and discuss history. He was a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau and a former board president of the Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation District. David was a member of the Vienna First United Methodist Church and had recently been attending the Simpson Baptist Church. David was a very caring person and loved to spend time with his family & many friends. He was a Big Brother, Dad, or Grandpa to everyone and will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of the Life of David Whiteside will be conducted Friday morning, September 28, 2012, at 10:30 AM at the Simpson Baptist Church. Dr. James W. Cecil will officiate. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in the Whiteside Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 27, 2012, from 5 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna and Friday, September 28, 2012, from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at the Simpson Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the preferred form of remembrance is memorials to the National Marrow Donor Program, 3001 Broadway Street, N.E., Suite 100, Minneapolis, MN 55413-1753 or to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 119 N. West St., Wheaton, IL 60187, or to the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076.
