Bill, as he was known to family and friends, was born October 21, 1934 in the Glendale community in Pope County Illinois. He was the son of Loren and Rettie (Aly) Lawrence. On January 21, 1966, Bill was united in marriage to Carolyn S. Brown in Ozark, Illinois. She survives. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by: his children – Donald Charles (Janet) Lawrence, Daniel Lee Lawrence, and Sue Ellen Lawrence all of Ozark; 2 grandchildren – Lori Ann Lawrence and Justin Lane Lawrence both of Ozark; a sister – Shirley (Chester “Chig”) Phillips of Fairfield; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by: a brother – Russell Lawrence and a sister – Fern Lee. Bill was a member of the Vienna High School graduating class of 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1959 with the rank of Private First Class. During his military service, Bill was stationed in Germany. Following his discharge from the Army, Bill was employed as a machinist by Caterpillar, Inc in Peoria, Illinois. Following his return to Southern Illinois, Bill first worked at the Johnson County Highway Department. He then was employed in the design and stencil department of J.W. Reynolds Monument Company until his retirement in December 1995. In his youth, Bill enjoyed horses and horseback riding. He and Carolyn also enjoyed motorcycling. Bill was a faithful and devout Christian. He and Carolyn worshipped at the Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church. Bill had served as a Deacon, Bible study leader and had taught in both the youth and adult Sunday School departments. A service honoring the life of Bill Lawrence will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, November 16, 2022, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in the Wise-Robinson Cemetery, north of Ozark. Military graveside honors will be accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 and the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Detail. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 11 AM until 1 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church and left in care of Bailey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 695, Vienna, IL 62995.
