Charlene Hodge

Golda “Charlene” (Webb) Hodge was born December 19, 1939, on the family farm in Rural Johnson County. She was the seventh child of nine, born to Ray and Golda (Hankla) Webb. She departed this life on Thursday morning, July 29, 2021, at 3:45 AM. On March 15, 1958 she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Dale Hodge, in Tunnel Hill, Illinois. Together they shared 63 years. The love and devotion they shared is marked by the loving care provided by Dale as Charlene suffered through the various stages of Alzheimer’s. He survives. Charlene is also survived by her daughter, Vanessa Hodge and Partner Kim Marlow of Brazil, Indiana, Son, Mike (DeeAnn) Hodge of McLeansboro, Illinois, Granddaughter Alesha (Chad) Storey of McLeansboro, and Great Grandsons, Rhett and Dean Storey. Charlene is also survived by siblings Elaine (Reggie) Romine, Glenn (Phyllis) Webb, and Phillip (Cara) Webb, Mother-In-Law, Lona Hodge, Sisters-in-law: Edith Webb, Donna (Sam) Blue, Barbara Belcher, Patricia (Doug) Hort, and Brother-in-Law, Kenneth George (Cindy) Hodge. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members also survive. In addition to her parents, Ray and Golda, Charlene is preceded in death by Fathers-in-law, Kenneth Hodge and James Brooks, Sisters and spouses: Mira June (Harley) Throgmorton, Norma (David) Martin, and Jean Phillips; Brothers: Kenneth Webb, Bob Webb and spouse, Edna Ann Webb, and Brother-in-law, Gene Belcher. Charlene attended Webb School, Goreville High School, and Marion Beauty College where she earned a degree in Cosmetology and Instruction. Charlene worked as an instructor at Shawnee Community College, Marion Beauty College, and Trend Beauty School. In addition, she maintained her own beauty shop in her home at Tunnel Hill. Charlene also served on the American Association of Cosmetology School Accreditation team traveling throughout the state of Illinois working to improve the quality of the cosmetology industry. Charlene ended her career working with the University of Illinois Extension Office as a Nutrition Specialist. She enjoyed teaching young students about nutrition, cooking, and safety in food preparation. She held classes in the various elementary schools throughout Johnson, Union, Alexander, and Pulaski Counties. As a member of the Tunnel Hill Community of Christ Church, Charlene served in various capacities, which included her love of music and playing the piano. A special note of gratitude is extended to the Hospice nurses: Cheryl, Tammy, Toni, Jessica, and Jen, and caregiver, Paula, for going over and beyond what was expected. A service honoring the life of Charlene Webb Hodge will be conducted Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 12 Noon at the Community of Christ Church in Tunnel Hill, Illinois. Dr. Glenn Webb will officiate. Burial will be in the Webb Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday morning, July 31, 2021, from 10:30 AM until service hour at the church.
