Alice Mae Crews

Alice Mae Crews, 73, of Springfield, formerly of Grand Chain and Princeville, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at St. John\'s Hospice, after a long and brave battle with cancer. Alice was born June 15, 1933, in Johnson County, the daughter of Frank and Mary Schierbaum. She married Billy D. Crews in 1952. He preceded her in death on September 2, 2006. Mrs. Crews graduated from Grand Chain High School and attended Draughon\'s Business College at Paducah, Kentucky. She was a full-time homemaker while her children were at home and was involved in Christian Women\'s Club and Home Extension. She enjoyed entertaining family, neighbors, and business associates and was noted for her graciousness as a hostess. In later years, she was employed at St. John\'s Hospital as a unit clerk. She was also a self-employed businesswoman, served as President of Mobile Home Matchmakers and was a distributor of Diamond Buildings and Gazebos. Her most treasured activity was to have all her children and grandchildren to her home for a meal or to celebrate a birthday. When she wasn\'t playing a spirited game of cards or bingo with the grandkids, she was recording the occasion by taking pictures with her trusty camera, which often didn\'t flash. Survivors; mother, Mary Schierbaum of Metropolis; three sons, Marty (wife, Linda) of Chatham, Mitchell (wife, Mary) of Geneva, and Michael (wife, Tara) of Shelbyville; four sisters, Rosanne (husband, Gene) Poole of Tunnel Hill, Marilyn Tite of Vienna, Betty (husband, Bill) Ryan of Ullin, Becky (husband, Larry) Buehler of Zelma, Missouri; one brother, Frank (wife, Sue) of Cypress; seven grandchildren, Susan, Matthew, Madeline, Michael, Noel, Blaine, and Jacob. Mrs. Crews is also survived by numerous extended family members, all of whom loved and admired her very much. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, May 24, 2007, at 10:30 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Marty Crews, Aliceƒ?Ts son, will officiate. Interment will be in the Webb Cemetery.
