Alan Mack Akins

Alan Mack Akins, age 65 years, a resident of rural Vienna, Illinois, passed away Sunday morning, January 21, 2018, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Alan was born August 8, 1952 in Tucson, Arizona. He was the son of Mack and Vivienne (Terry) Akins. On December 24, 1971, Alan was united in marriage to Brenda Kay Brumley at Pleasant Ridge Church near the Bloomfield community. She survives. Other survivors include: his sons – Damon Akins and Jerry Morgan of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; a sister – Givonna (her husband, Ed) Scarborough of Simpson; a brother – Matt (his wife, Mona) Akins of Simpson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Alan was preceded in death by his parents. Alan was a 1970 graduate of Vienna High School and had attended Shawnee Community College. His working career began as a welder at Transcraft, Inc. in Anna. He later was employed in the construction field before working as a truck dispatcher for 25 years for the Tom Via Trucking Company. Since January 2008, Alan has been employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division as a motor carrier compliance officer. He was proud to say that he would “keep you safe on the road.” Alan served for 30 years in the Illinois Army National Guard and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Alan had a lifelong love of the land and enjoyed the outdoors working on the family farm. He is remembered for his strong work ethic, his energy and vitality. Alan only met a stranger once. He always worked very hard to make a friend of everyone that he came into contact with. Alan was a loving and devoted family man. A service honoring the life of Alan Akins will be conducted Friday morning, January 26, 2018, at 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor David Faulkner will officiate. Entombment will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 5 PM – 8 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
